Barry R. Elson is Recipient of CTAM’s One of a Kind Award
(Alexandria, VA – July 14, 2004) Barry Elson, Acting Chief Executive Officer of
Telewest Communications, has been selected as the distinguished recipient of the
2004 CTAM One of a Kind Award. Elson, a CTAM Chairman in 1994 and a member of the CTAM Board of Directors for five years, is being recognized for his strategic vision and inclusive style of leadership of CTAM in the early 1990s. Elson helped form a strategic plan that put CTAM on a path to success, including creating the
CTAM Educational Foundation and popular member services, including the CTAM
Pulse and a number of online products.
Elson was named Chairman last fall of Telewest Broadband, the second largest cable company in the United Kingdom. He was appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer of Telewest Communications in February 2004. Elson has been a senior executive in the broadband-telephony-video industry for 18 years, almost 14 of those with Cox Communications in a series of senior line operating positions culminating in Executive Vice President of Operations. From 1997 to 2000, he was also President of Conectiv Enterprises and Executive Vice President of Conectiv, a diversifying Middle Atlantic States power company. Most recently, he was Chief Operating Officer of Urban Media, a VC-backed entrepreneurial start up in the business sector of telecommunications.
The CTAM One of a Kind Award was created in the memory of the late
Roy Mehlman and is given periodically by former CTAM Board members (the “Classic TAMers”) to an industry executive who best embodies Mehlman’s willingness to give of himself so that others in the business might benefit. Elson generously shared his time and ideas to build CTAM, particularly working with CTAM chapter leaders to develop their skills. He was a strong supporter of WICT, helping create the initial case studies for their management conference and working on their annual educational conferences for five years.
“Barry much enjoys helping people become all they can be,” said Char Beales, CTAM President and CEO.
Elson will be recognized at the CTAM Summit, Full Throttle – scheduled for July 18-21, 2004 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. For more information on cable’s premier educational marketing and management conference,
