2016 AVC Mid-Year Meeting Key Takeaways

Meeting Summary

  • Cable is (now) a broadband business: Overall penetration of broadband is rising, and prices are heading higher, providing a huge opportunity for cable to take the share of growing penetration to drive additional revenue.
  • Advertising is shifting with more advertisers looking for custom content to connect to consumers, and audience-based targeting on a more granular level across all platforms.
  • Measurement is not just about reach for an audience, but more importantly, attention and engagement for advertisers. There’s a need for the industry to work together to deliver attention metrics to better measure ROI.
  • The customer is in control. Every consumer is their own program director, CFO, shopper, activity director, CTO, etc.
  • To enhance the consumer experience, it’s critical that all products are available on all platforms to all consumers.
  • Content discovery is a strong retention tool, as 45% of those likely to change providers in the next 6 months, would consider keeping their existing service if their provider provided functionality to make it easier to find something to watch.
  • HDR is believed to deliver a superior video experience, but 4K is still in play despite some of its challenges.
